AGADEZ (The Sultanate of Agadez)
The History and the Sultan
The Masarautar Agadez (Sultanate of Agadez) is an ancient and powerful kingdom. Its origins date back centuries to a time of internal conflict over leadership. Unable to choose a leader from among themselves, the locals sought help from the Islamic Ottoman Empire in Istanbul. This led to the appointment of the first Sultan of Turkish origin, Muhammad Agga-Abba Bin Muhammad Almubarak. Over generations, trade and intermarriage between the locals and the Turks created a "half-cast" (half-Turkish, half-local) population known for their distinct beauty.
The current ruler is Sultane Muhammad Hamud, an "original" Tuareg (Buzu) whose mother was from Istanbul. He is a modern, powerful, and majestic king who has completely transformed Agadez from a traditional district into a thriving hub of agriculture, education, and modern architecture, earning him the nickname "Zamani Goma" (Ten Eras/The Modernized One).
The Weakness of the King: Khadeeja (Akhnan)
Despite his immense wealth and the fear he strikes into his enemies, the Sultan has one "weakness"—a part of his soul that defines his life. This is his daughter, Khadeeja, popularly known as Akhnan. To him, she is more precious than his kingdom, his titles, or his vast riches.
The Palace: Palais de l'Emir
The palace is a "world within a world," a French-style villa complex situated within the ancient walls of the Agadez fortress. Though the Sultan has two wives, the villa contains six sections. The largest and most opulent sections are for the Sultan and his wives, decorated in a style that blends traditional heritage with modern French architecture.
The Household and Hajiya Zaitun
The villa is managed by two chief administrators, Ayaana and Me Wada, who oversee a vast army of servants and guards. The most active wing of the palace currently is that of Hajiya Zaitun, the Sultan’s senior wife. She is known as "Uwa" (Mother) to Akhnan, though the text hints at a hidden reason why she does not use the title of "Biological Mother."
Inside Akhnan’s Chamber: The Princess
The room is a masterpiece of design, decorated in Ruby Red and Gold, featuring Italian royal chairs, French curtains, and crystal chandeliers.
The Scene:
Inside the bedroom, we find Akhnan (Khadeeja). She is a striking beauty—fair-skinned, slender, and appearing to be around 24 years old. She inherits her looks from both her Tuareg and Turkish lineages. She is surrounded by four specialized maids and her close companion, Aisa.
- The Preparation: The maids are meticulously dressing her in a luxurious gown and styling her long, black hair with ribbons.
- The Conflict: Akhnan seems indifferent or even annoyed by the grand preparations. She refers to the upcoming event as a "play" or "drama."
- The Conversation: Akhnan is talking to Aisa about a past relationship that caused someone deep pain. Aisa is shocked when Akhnan dismisses the arrival of a certain VIP, Altaab Nu'uman, as mere "theater."
Akhnan’s Command:
In a soft, calm voice—one that commands authority without ever needing to shout—Akhnan tells her maid, Birra, to remove all the elaborate hair decorations. She insists that a single ribbon is enough. Despite the strict orders from Mammina (Hajiya Zaitun) to have her fully ready within sixty minutes, the maids immediately obey Akhnan, knowing her word can override anyone else's in the palace.
